What Is AMD/ARD Risk Assessment & Geochemical Modelling?

AMD/ARD risk assessment evaluates whether mine materials may generate acidic or metalliferous drainage when exposed to air and water. It combines geological and mineralogical characterization, static and kinetic testing, water-quality data, and site conditions to classify materials and identify potential sources, pathways, and environmental risks.

Geochemical modelling uses these data to simulate mineral reactions, acid–base balance, contaminant release, mixing, and water-quality evolution under different mine-life scenarios. The results support PAF–NAF classification, material placement, waste-rock and tailings management, prevention strategies, monitoring, rehabilitation, and closure planning.

Build Decisions on Representative Evidence

Ganeca develops representative sampling programs for waste rock, tailings, ore, pit walls, soil, seepage, surface water, and groundwater. 

Samples are evaluated through mineralogical analysis, static tests, kinetic tests, and leaching studies.

These investigations determine acid-forming potential, neutralisation capacity, reaction rates, and the release behaviour of metals, sulfate, and other constituents.

Identifying AMD Potential Through Static Testing

At a coal-mining operation in Central Kalimantan, Akalab—part of Ganeca Group—was entrusted by PT Suprabari Mapanindo Mineral to conduct static testing for AMD potential. The study provided scientific evidence to support the geochemical classification and management of mine materials.

Static-test results help distinguish potentially acid-forming and non-acid-forming materials, supporting decisions on material segregation, placement, and further investigation. This project demonstrates how laboratory evidence can become the foundation for broader AMD/ARD risk management.
