About Dr. Sonny

An environmental engineer, academic, researcher, and entrepreneur dedicated to addressing complex environmental challenges across the industrial and mining sectors.

As the Founder and Senior Managing Director of Ganeca Environmental Services, Dr. Ir. M. Sonny Abfertiawan, S.T., M.T. leads the development of a science-driven company integrating environmental consultancy, technology, and operational services. With more than two decades of experience across industry and academia, he has contributed to strategic projects involving mine water management, acid mine drainage, pollutant transport and transformation, and industrial and domestic wastewater treatment.

Founder and Senior Managing Director

Sonny earned his bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering and his master’s and doctoral degrees in Mining Engineering from the Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB). He continues to contribute to the university as a lecturer and researcher, focusing on hydrobiogeochemistry, mine water management, water quality, and mine closure planning.

His involvement in the International Mine Water Association (IMWA), the International Water Association (IWA), and the Institution of Engineers Indonesia (PII) strengthens his engagement with professional and research communities at both national and international levels.

A comprehensive reference combining scientific research and field experience in identifying, modelling, preventing, and treating acid mine drainage.
